Mostly Paleo Austin Recap Part 2

I promised I would finish my recap of our recent adventure to Austin, so here it is. A little delayed, but still here!

One night while we were there I wanted to tried a fancier place. We chose (or should I say that I chose…) to go to the Salty Sow. It was a really unique, modern place that had delicious food and wine. They focused on local ingredients and their menu would change based on seasonality and availability. Triple Fried Duck Fat Fries were on the appetizer menu and we couldn’t resist. They were served with a 110 minute egg (which is something I’ve never had) and a béarnaise sauce. I couldn’t figure out exactly what was in the sauce but the flavor was awesome paired with the fries and egg. I don’t think I would ever have come up with that combination of flavors, but it was delicious. We devoured the entire plate. Definitely not Paleo, but 100% worth it.

For our entree we split the steak dinner special which was a sous vide hanger steak with a red wine blue cheese sauce, roasted garlic mashed potatoes and broccolini. Joe wasn’t super excited about the steak, but I thought it was pretty good. Washed the meal down with a nice glass of wine and we had two satisfied bellies.

Sunday morning we went to The Austin Stone Community Church in downtown and it rocked…literally. The main singer was simply amazing and I felt like I was at a concert. The pastor was also really great and it was a very welcoming church. After church, we headed to Mulberry for brunch. It’s a very small place, but they had $3 mimosas and what looked to be a good menu. I had the frittata with goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto with an arugula salad on the side…yum! Joe had a huge slice of toasted brioche, a fried egg, pancetta and Gruyere cheese which he said was really good. I also had an Americano to drink with real cream and it was perfect.

For our last night in Austin, we headed to Bangers which is a sausage house and beer garden. It was beautiful outside that night so we decided to sit in their beer garden. It consisted of large picnic tables that you shared with others. I liked the togetherness of it. That night they were having some kind of party for a local magazine and their dog issue. There were dogs everywhere! We both love dogs and had fun petting and playing with the pups. Bangers’ menu has unique sausages they make in-house and a lot of different beers to choose from.

IMG_0773I tried the duck, bacon and fig sausage on a salad instead of a bun (which is an option on the menu). It came with roasted figs and caramelized onions on the side which were good. Joe wasn’t super hungry so he ordered the side of green beans with huge chunks of bacon. He ended up picking out the bacon and leaving most of the green beans. 🙂

If you are ever in Austin, all of the places I mentioned were worth trying. There are a lot of options for Paleo and non-Paleo eating alike. They are especially known for supporting local farmers in Austin and it’s very apparent throughout their restaurants.

I had a lot of food inspiration and will be sharing new recipes soon!
