What We Want You To Know About Politics

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
- Romans 13:1-7

Nothing captures your dad’s view on politics quite like that of the verses above. God is in control, God appointed the leaders over our country (and every other country for that matter). God also says that we are to supposed to be subject to the authority of governing authorities. This is why we believe it is important to vote. We want someone running our country that is most aligned with what God asks of us in the Bible. If we believe they will lead us into a direction towards what God calls of us, then we will vote for them, we do not agree that one party is more Christian than another but would rather assess each candidate for who they are.

Each person will have what they value more than other things and no political party will align with all of your beliefs. It is hard to weigh one thing over another but sometimes we are forced into that situation when one party goes against something that we are for and the other party goes against something else that we are for. You may have something that is a deal breaker for you and no matter what else you don’t agree with, you will vote for that party because of that one thing.

Your dad personally struggled with why so many companies and people that I didn’t know cared if he voted. At one point we realized that there is monetization in number of voters. The more people that vote, the more valuable it becomes, the more political parties spend on advertising dollars. This was hard for him to get past. HeI don’t like being a number and targeted. But we also feel that it is our right and duty as Christians and Americans to do our parts in electing a president for our country.

Ultimately, God is in control though. So no matter if your party wins or loses, have faith and trust in God. The world will go on, it may seem like the best or worst thing in the world after every election, but just know that things will change in another 4 years and you will have to go through the entire process again.
