Your dad disliked school and simply used it a means to get a good job after college. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions, such as going into a profession that pays well and you may not necessarily enjoy all that much, but will give you the ability to afford things that you really enjoy and the ability to provide for your family, or you can go into a profession that may not pay all that well but you get to do what you love every day. Your dad chose the former.
That’s not to say that he hated his job, he loved aspects of the job without a doubt. But you may find that the things you enjoy and the things you are good at don’t align. They seem at the opposite ends of the spectrum. But God gave you both, the passion and the skills. If they don’t align, you will likely have to make a decision. Which do you pursue?
From personal experience, if you allow yourself to only chase the money, you will not be happy and will spend years of your life in regret. On the flip side, if you chase your passions, you may not be providing any good to society.
So, our recommendation is to pray. Pray that God will give you wisdom, give you guidance in tough decisions such as these. Once you have prayed, consider the one that will have the potential to do more for the common good.
As for college and continuing education, we think it is critical to continue learning, but to only consider college and continuing education would be a missed opportunity. There are numerous ways to get an education, whether it’s online training, apprenticeships, experimenting on your own or under someone else’s guidance, we believe that continuing to learn and find out about this amazing world that God gave us is critical to following God’s plan for your life.
