I Love You to the Moon

For every scroll saw project that I work on, I am going to create a new post to provide the recipient with some additional information about their project and why I chose to do what I did.

I am fairly new to scroll sawing and reached out on Facebook to see if anyone was interested in having me make something for them, as long as they didn’t mind if I tried something new. One of the comments I received was to make a picture using the words “I love you to the moon and back”.

This one caught my interest because my wife and I actually have a picture in our house with this exact phrase (except in Italian). I looked at the picture and thought it would be a fun project for me to try my first attempt at an inlay. Inlays are when you take 2 pieces of wood and cut them in such a way that one piece fits inside of the other.

As part of this project, I also got a bandsaw and wanted to give resawing a try. Resawing is when you cut a board in two along its thickness. This allows you to bookmatch wood to provide a wider background to work with and you can put them side by side and can barely see a difference.

My new (used) bandsaw!

In the case of this project, I wanted to inlay the moon but also bevel it to give it a more three dimensional feel. For whatever reason, this was WAY more difficult than I expected. I couldn’t get the angle right to have it inlay properly and ruined quite a bit of wood to get it right.

After finding the patterns, resawing and cleaning up the scrap wood, finding the right angle of the cuts, the rest of it went fairly quickly.

3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

Psalms 8:3-4 (NIV)
