This is a topic that I’ve wanted to talk about for awhile.
I believe most of us have very short term memories. We can’t look past what is going on right now. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons divorce rates are so high. We are a “what have you done for me lately” nation.
I think we forget about all the good times, how things used to be, and why we are where we are now. Sometimes it is very tough to look passed all the negatives. It may seem almost impossible to remember the good ol’ days because so many negative things have happened to you lately. Maybe all these things started happening within the past week, or month, or even year but try to think back before those things happened.
A couple situations come to mind.
- When you first started your job, you were probably anxious to get in there and do the best you can. Over time, the company started changing it’s policies, started leaning more heavily on you, and you didn’t like where things were going.
- When you first started dating, you were excited and passionate to be with your significant other. Over time, they changed and stopped being “themselves”.
There is such a lack of commitment in our generation that people wonder why our country is falling apart. Consider this, if you hop jobs every 2 or 3 years, you may be improving your self-worth by doing that, but are you benefiting a company in any way? How much can you actually learn and accomplish in just a few short years? Now think about if you stayed at 1 company for 20 or 30 years. How much could you accomplish for the company in that amount of time? I’m not saying you should never change jobs, I think there are many reasons to change jobs, I’m just asking you to consider what I’m saying.
Secondly, consider the way you are treating your significant other. Perhaps you have changed too. Perhaps they don’t like what you have become. It’s not about looking at the negatives of the other person. It’s about finding the positives and focusing on those. Maybe there aren’t many positives, so once you find one, you have to focus on bringing that out in them otherwise it may get lost under everything else.
