Broken Gas Gauge

“Helping hands” posts are designed to give my readers an idea on how to help others.  Sometimes I will post things that I have done myself to help someone else, sometimes it will be ideas that I have, or sometimes it will be things I have seen other people doing.  I will try to mix it up between ones that involve spending money and ones that you can do for free.

A couple of weeks ago, early one morning, I let the dogs out to go the bathroom.  A couple of minutes later, they started barking and I heard what sounded like thunder.  I peeked out the front window and saw a man in a rusty, beaten down old truck.  He was getting out of the truck and reached in the back to grab a gas can.  He then started walking towards the main road.

I immediately realized that he had ran out of gas.  I ran out there to see if he needed help.  He said he had a broken gas gauge and he was always running out of gas.  He usually kept some in his gas can but he said he just forgot to fill it up.

I remembered that I had some gas in my garage, it wasn’t much but enough to help him get to a nearby gas station.  I asked if he needed some money for some gas but he said he didn’t need it.  He was extremely grateful of my generosity and said a few very kind things to me.

I can’t imagine how I would feel if my gas gauge constantly gave me an inaccurate reading.  Maybe next time you see someone in a similar situation, you will be willing to help them.  Or maybe next time you are at the gas station, you could offer to pay for someones gas.  With the price of gas continuing to rise, who wouldn’t enjoy some free gas?
