Being Materialistic

Being a man and living in the US has made me extremely brainwashed when it comes to material goods.  I am a techie.  I work in the tech world.  So it’s only logical for me to want to the next best thing and to be an early adopter of all things technology.

I have this theory that everyone is addicted to something.  For some, it’s technology, for others it’s caffeine or sugar or violence or cursing or helping others or worshiping their god or drugs or porn.  But for me it’s gadgets.  Apparently the constant advertising that guys are supposed to like tech stuff actually worked on me.

But the Bible clearly states in 1 John 2:16 ESV:

For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.

So today I am actually combining my Wednesday and Thursday posts.  I’m revealing something honest about myself and then I’m challenging myself and you to take a stand against your addiction.  Prove to yourself as well as God, that you can and will give up anything for him.  Maybe it will be just for a day, a week, a year, or for good.  But take that one thing, that you routinely use almost every day, and don’t use it.  Try your hardest not to think about it during this time but to focus on everything but that.
